Dijkstra recounts his early education and training as a theoretical physicist and as a 'programmer'. He describes his work developing software for the Mathematical Centre in Amsterdam, the completion of his Ph.D. thesis, and his activities at several early information processing conferences. Dijkstra also discourses on the development of ALGOL 60 and the origins of computing science in Europe and America.

Edsger W. Dikjstra was originally from Holland, and while working his way through college, decided to devote more time to programming and less to theoretical physics, eventually becoming a early programmer in the just-developing profession. He was a professor in the Department of Computer Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin. It isn't very clear what his connection was to Burroughs.
